“AGENCIA”
I was recently commissioned by an Independent Queer Puerto Rican Filmmaker to create a poster for their recent project called “AGENCIA”. AGENCIA explores space and place within the colonial archive of films produced by the United States federal government and the División de Educación de la Comunidad, a Puerto Rican government agency founded in 1949 to provide films and literature to rural communities for public education. An essay film in 3 parts, AGENCIA juxtaposes exploitative cinematic material made from different governmental lenses that splits the dichotomy of colonizer/colonized and reveals the complicity of both government entities in upholding patriarchal machismo values and the economic exploitation of Operation Bootstrap through the institutionalization of Puerto Rican culture. Woven throughout these images of uncredited Puerto Ricans and transatlantic narrators is a personal narrative thread of agency expressed by Abuela Keka, a disembodied espiritu del rio, and the reclamation of Puerto Rican resistance and cultural preservation
